A: The lodge is about a 3-hour drive from Anchorage. You can rent a car in Anchorage from almost all major rental car companies. You can also choose to fly to Kenai and rent a car in Kenai.


Q: What types of fish can I catch at Riddle’s Fishing Lodge on the Kenai River?

A: You can catch silver salmon, sockeye salmon, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden, depending on the type of trip you book and the location you’re fishing on the Kenai River. For the past several years this fishery has been limited in regards to king salmon fishing opportunities and those that are available are catch and release. If you’re interested in King fishing let us know and we can talk about options for other fisheries nearby.


Q: Do I need to have fishing experience to fish at Riddle’s Fishing Lodge?

A: No, you don’t need any fishing experience, though, of course, it always helps! Our guides are experienced and will provide instruction and guidance.


Q: Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?

A: No, we provide all necessary fishing gear, including rods, reels, tackle, and waders. If you are concerned about your hip wader size being available, shoot us a note, and we will let you know if its something we keep in stock. We do recommend you bring your own rain gear, though we have some jackets if you forget yours or need something more heavy-duty. Sizes are just really limited!


Q: What is the best time of year to fish at Riddle’s Fishing Lodge?

A: The best time of year to fish depends on the type of fish you want to catch. Sockeye salmon fishing is best toward the middle and end of July, silver salmon fishing is best in August and September, and rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing is good all season long.


Q: What should I pack for my stay at Riddle’s Fishing Lodge?

A: We recommend packing lots of layers, including warm and waterproof clothing, comfortable shoes or boots, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You can check out our recommended packing list here as well.


Q: Do I need a fishing license?

A: Yes, you can purchase a fishing license before you arrive at the lodge for the appropriate length of your stay here at the State of Alaska’s website: https://store.adfg.alaska.gov/


Q: Is fish processing available onsite?

A: Yes,

Riddle’s Fishing Lodge does offer on-site fish processing for your catch. This includes the cleaning and filleting of your fish, vacuum sealing and freezing. We can also pack it up in fish boxes for your trip home or we can arrange for Federal Express service as well if you don’t wish to take it with you.

If you would like to process your own fish, please no fish cleaning in the cabins. For your convenience, there is a fish cleaning table by the riverside deck.

Q: When is check in and check out?

A: Check in is after 4 p.m. and check out is by 10 a.m. on departure day. Sometimes early check in or late check out is available, just let us know prior to your arrival and we will let you know if we can accomodate your needs.


Q: Is there daily housekeeping?

A:

There is no daily housekeeping, but please let us know if you need anything while you stay with us. We are happy to come in and replenish towels and any other items you might need, such as coffee, creamer, toilet paper & paper towels.

Trash service is not provided during your stay; please empty your trash in the dumpster as it gets full. If you choose to utilize the cookware, dishes, and utensils, you are expected to leave them as you found them.

Q: What is the weather like in Alaska during the summer months?

A: The weather in Alaska during the summer months can vary, but generally, the temperatures range from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit (10-21 degrees Celsius) during the day. It can also rain frequently, so it’s important to pack waterproof clothing.


Q: Are meals included in the fishing and lodging packages?

A: No, meals are not included in our fishing and lodging packages. However, there are several grocery stores nearby where you can purchase food to cook in your cabin or under our covered outdoor barbecue area. The cabins are fully equipped with everything you need to cook and prepare all of your meals. We also provide to-go soft sided coolers if you need so you can pack lunches for your fishing excursions.


Q: Where can I find nearby grocery stores?

A: There are several grocery stores in Kenai and Soldotna, which are about a 10- minute and 20-minute drive from the lodge, respectively. These include Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walmart and Three Bears (which is similar to Costco).


Q: Do you offer guided fishing trips?

A: We exclusively offer guided fishing trips with experienced guides who know the Kenai River and its fishery and we specialize in booking fishing and lodging packages combined. You are welcome to head out and fish on your own, and we, of course, can lend you the gear to do so, but it will be based on first come, first serve availability. Be sure to check in with our experienced guides when you arrive if you are looking for spots to fish on your own at your leisure.


Q: Can I fish for more than one type of fish during my stay?

A: Yes, you can fish for multiple types of fish during your stay. Our guides will help you target the species you’re interested in and if you’d like to get ocean species in while you’re here we have many ocean charter captains we work with to get our clients out on the saltwater for halibut, ling cod, rockfish and many more!


Q: Can I fish from the shore or will we be in a boat?

A: You may be fishing from the boat or the shore, depending on the type of fishing you are doing. Our guides will help you determine the best fishing spot based on the species you want to catch.


Q: Is there Wi-Fi available at Riddle’s Fishing Lodge?

A: Yes, we have Wi-Fi available in the lodge and in all cabins, though the best wifi service will likely be on the deck or under the covered barbecue area.


Q: What types of wildlife can I expect to see during my stay at Riddle’s Fishing Lodge?

A: You may see moose, bears, bald eagles, and other wildlife during your stay. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings and to keep a safe distance from wildlife on any of your guided or unguided excursions.
